WOCE Component ACM7

This experiment produced 81 current meter records from 9 moorings. You can view metadata and download the records by clicking on links in the table below. Each current meter record is identified in the table by its depth and the name of the mooring. A brief description of the experiment also is available. You may want to look at a map of the array to see where the moorings were. If you download any of the current meter records you should review the note on file format. From here you can also move up one level to the list of WOCE experiments.

Description of WOCE component ACM7

These arrays were designed to measure the northwestward flow of warm water in the upper layers, and the southeastward counterflow of North Atlantic Deep Water, along the Brazilian slope at the equator. Several moorings carried upward-looking current profilers (ADCPs) at 300 meters, allowing for the calculation of upper layer transports. Below this depth the moorings carried Aanderaa current meters.

The first three moorings (K327, K328, and K329) were deployed in September of 1989. Only one of the ADCPs (on mooring K327) produced data. These moorings were replaced about a year later, in October 1990, with moorings K339, K340, and K341. All three of these moorings carried successful ADCPs. This second array remained in place for about a year, until September 1991. After a year's hiatus, three new moorings (K359, K360, and K361) were deployed; these were recovered about a year and a half later, in March 1994.

Moorings K327, K339, and K359 - the southernmost mooring of each series - were in approximately the same location (see map). Similarly, Moorings K340 and K360, of the second and third deployments, were in approximately the same location. All three ADCPs of the second deployment and all three ADCPs of the third deployment produced good data. The ADCP records from the third deployment contain vertical velocity, as well as horizontal velocity.

Format of the current records

These files have been compressed with the ZIP compression utility. After downloading them, you will need to expand them. On a PC, WinZip or Pkunzip will do the job. Other utilities are available for the Unix and Macintosh environments. After expansion, you will have ascii files in OSU's stranger format.

The stranger format begins with several lines of header information that are meant to be machine-readable. They contain a Fortran format specification that will be useful in reading the file, a pointer to the first line of data, and a description of the data. Each line of the current record itself contains the time of the sample, the values recorded, and a line count.

You should know that end-of-line in these files is a carriage-return plus line-feed (the PC convention). This means that in a Unix environment (where a single line-feed serves as end-of-line) you may want to remove the carriage-returns.
