Monsoon currents south of Ceylon (ICM8)

This experiment produced 73 current meter records from 9 moorings. You can view metadata and download the records by clicking on links in the table below. Each current meter record is identified in the table by its depth and the name of the mooring. A brief description of the experiment is available. You may want to look at a map of the array to see where the moorings were. If you do download any of the records you should review the note on file format. Brief Description of ICM8

The zonal monsoon circulation south of Ceylon is a crucial link for exchange between the northeastern and the northwestern quadrants of the Indian Ocean. The present experiment produced the first direct measurements from moored instruments and shipboard profiling of the seasonal and shorter-term variability of this flow.

The first three current meter moorings were deployed along a north-south line just south of Ceylon (see map) during late December and early January 1991, and were retrieved in March 1992. The northernmost and southernmost moorings (K1 and K3) carried acoustic doppler profilers at a depth of about 250 meters. Several Aanderaa RCM's were positioned below each ADCP, and on the middle mooring (K2).

Four additional moorings were emplaced in July 1993 and recovered during September 1994. This array (Moorings K4, K5, K6, K7, K8, and K9) was located along the same meridian as the first group, but extended farther to the south. Again, the moorings contained a mixture of ADCP's and Aanderaa RCM's.

Format of the current records

These files have been compressed with the ZIP compression utility. After downloading them, you will need to expand them. WinZip or Pkzip will do the job on a PC that is running Microsoft Windows. Under Linux, gunzip will expand these files. Other utilities are available for the UNIX and Macintosh environments (for example, unzip and/or gunzip are present on most UNIX systems). After expansion, you will have binary files in the netCDF format.

netCDF is a self-documenting format that can be accessed by a variety of software tools. You can click here to learn about netCDF and available software packages that can be used to read and manipulate netCDF files.
