WOCE Component ACM9

ACM9 produced 101 current records from 4 ADCPs moored consecutively in the Strait of Gibraltar over a 2-year period. You can view metadata and/or download the records by clicking on links in the table below. Each current meter record (which represents a single ADCP bin) is identified in the table by its depth and the name of the mooring. A brief description of the experiment also is available. You may want to look at a map of the array to see where the moorings were. If you download any of the current records you should review the note on file format. From here you can also move up one level to the list of WOCE experiments.

Please note that the owner of these data (Julio Candela, jcandela@cicese.mx) has requested that you consult with him and include him as a co-author, if you publish results based on these records.

Brief description of ACM9

During 1994 - 1996 a two-year experimental program aimed at bringing new elements to the study of the water exchange at the Strait of Gibraltar was conducted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and the Spanish Instituto Hidrografico de la Marina. The core of the program consisted of continuous vertical profile measurements using an upward-looking, bottom-mounted ADCP at the strait's mid-sill position. Four consecutive 6-month deployments were made at the site, beginning in October 1994 and ending in September 1996.

The goal of the experiment was to determine seasonal and interannual variability in the exchange flows, and to compare these results with flow observations made 10 years earlier during the GIBEX 85-86 Experiment (Kinder and Bryden, 1987. The 1985-1986 Gibraltar Experiment. EOS, 68, 786-787 and 793-795).

ACM9 was a precursor to a larger experiment sponsored by the European Commission under the title CANIGO in the Straits of Gibraltar. The latter experiment involved moorings, hydrography and ship-mounted ADCPs. The Irish Marine Data Centre is producing a data CD for the experiment.

Format of the current records

These files have been compressed with the ZIP compression utility. After downloading them, you will need to expand them. WinZip or Pkzip will do the job on a PC that is running Microsoft Windows. Under Linux, gunzip will expand these files. Other utilities are available for the UNIX and Macintosh environments (for example, unzip and/or gunzip are present on most UNIX systems). After expansion, you will have binary files in the netCDF format.

netCDF is a self-documenting format that can be accessed by a variety of software tools. You can click here to learn about netCDF and available software packages that can be used to read and manipulate netCDF files.
