EAST-1 is a component of the East Asian Seas Time-series (EAST) experiments.

The ADCP files contain time series of speed, direction, u component, v component, and depth. The depths are those of the acoustic bins. They were calculated by subtracting a fixed quantity for each bin from the depth given by a pressure sensor at the depth of the ADCP. The fixed quantity in question is just the ADCP's nominal depth minus that of the bin. Thus the depth series are accurate measurements of each bin's distance from the moving sea surface. We have included here only data from the deepest 27 bins. The shallower bins were less useful.

A cautionary note: These data were made available to us in CDF format files. Following the standards of that format, they contain time series that show the time of every measurement. These particular files also show the start and stop times of the series in their global variables sections. The problem is that the times in the global variables are 2 days earlier than those in the measurements section. Here, we have chosen to use the individual measurement times. Thus the series here start on 14 March 2011, and not on 12 March 2011 which is the date provided in the global variables sections of the original files.
