ICM6 (Leeuwin Current)

This experiment produced current records from

deployed on 5 moorings. You can view metadata and/or download the records by clicking on links in the table below. Each record is identified in the table by its depth and the name of the mooring. A brief description of the experiment also is available. You may want to look at a map of the array to see where the moorings were. If you download any of the current meter records you should review the note on file format. From here you can also move up one level to the list of WOCE experiments.

The instruments on these moorings sampled at intervals varying from 10 minutes (the Neil Brown acoustic current meters) to 1 hour (the ADCPs) to 3 hours (the Aanderaas). All of the data in this archive have been filtered and have a time increment of 6 hours. Cosine-Lanczos filters with a "cut-off period of 40 hours" were employed to remove inertial energy, the diurnal and semidiurnal tides, and higher frequencies.

Brief description of ICM6

These data are part of the Australian contribution to WOCE. The primary aim of ICM6 was to determine the seasonal variability and transport of the Leeuwin Current near 20 South, and thus its meridional heat flux.

Six moorings with a total of 22 instruments were deployed along a line extending 110 km westwards off the northwest coast of Australia, spanning water depths ranging from 250 to 3050 m (see map). The current meters included 4 RDI upward-looking ADCPs, 5 Neil Brown ACM2s, and 13 Aanderaa RCMs. Because of acoustic release failures it was necessary to trawl for two of the moorings during the recovery phase. 18 instruments were recovered, 17 of which produced useful data.

The moorings were deployed in August 1994. Moorings 1, 2, 3, and 6 were recovered without incident during June 1996; Moorings 4 and 5 were partially recovered by trawling about two months later. Only one current meter from Mooring 4 was recovered, and it produced no useable data.

Format of the current records

These files have been compressed with the ZIP compression utility. After downloading them, you will need to expand them. On a PC, WinZip or Pkunzip will do the job. Other utilities are available for the Unix and Macintosh environments. After expansion, you will have ascii files in OSU's stranger format.

The stranger format begins with several lines of header information that are meant to be machine-readable. They contain a Fortran format specification that will be useful in reading the file, a pointer to the first line of data, and a description of the data. Each line of the current record itself contains the time of the sample, the values recorded, and a line count.

Please be aware that end-of-line in these files is a carriage-return plus line-feed (the PC convention). This means that in a Unix environment (where a single line-feed serves as end-of-line) you may want to remove the carriage-returns.
