CMDAC has prepared an alternate file in which the data were smoothed in two steps: First, many individual spikes were removed by linear interpolation. Second, u and v (and implicitly speed and direction) were smoothed further by passing both series through a hanning filter, which has weights 1/4, 1/2, and 1/4.
