With regard to speed and direction, we include here a note of caution from CEFAS: This record is suspect and should be used with caution because (a) Very few (approximately 2% of the total) directions were recorded between 80 and 160 degrees. The compass may have been influenced by the angle of the earth's magnetic field, or the meter may not have been horizontal, or the compass may have been faulty. (b) The tape translation after 83 days - by 11 May - becomes poor (the meter reference number changes and pulse length errors occur); and although the problem appears to clear by day 146 - 13 July - it subsequently returns when the record ends, on 21 August 1993. As a result of the second problem, we (OSU) have removed speed and direction in lines 1619 - 3106 (0030 11 May 93 - 2330 12 Jul 93).
