Rain fell in the Canyon in early October of 2003, and we found many flowers blooming when we arrived. These were a few feet from my tent at our campsite. Note the prickly pear cactus nearby. Prickly pears are common on the canyon floor.

The fruits of these cactuses form an important part of the diet of some of the Canyon's fauna. We found large numbers of their seeds in bear scat around the Canyon floor.
