MAFF's comment: "There is a noticeable shortage of current
directions recorded between 114 and 186 degrees. Is this real?
Note that the histogram of directions is similar to that from
the meter above."

The speed series contains large numbers of spikes that appear
to be instrument errors. CMDAC has prepared an alternate file
in which the data were smoothed in two steps: First, many
individual spikes were removed by linear interpolation. Second,
u and v (and implicitly speed and direction) were smoothed
further by passing both series through a hanning filter, which
has weights 1/4, 1/2, and 1/4. Both the original file and the
alternate version are available on this disk.
