Processing notes

   1. All time series originally contained 5 gaps caused by a
failure of the ADCP's memory chips:

         lines 1720 - 2264 (0425 17 Dec 96 - 1745 24 Dec 96)
         lines 2279 - 2290 (2245 24 Dec 96 - 0225 25 Dec 96)
         lines 2295 - 3898 (0405 25 Dec 96 - 1025 16 Jan 97)
         line 9166 (1425 30 Mar 97)
         lines 10855 - 10861 (0125 23 Apr 97 - 0325 23 Apr 97)

The latter 2 gaps have been bridged in all series, by linear
and predictive interpolation respectively. The first 3 gaps
remain in all series, though the number of good samples during
24 and 25 Dec 96 is so small that there is effectively one
long gap running from 17 Dec 96 to 16 Jan 97.

   2. With the exception of the gaps described above, the deepest
      6 bins (depths 140m, 132m, ..., 100m) contained no bad velocity
      data. The next 9 bins (depths 92m, 84m, ..., 28m) each
contained a small number of bad velocity ensembles that have
been bridged by linear interpolation. The worst of these,
bin 15 at 28m, contained only 17 bad velocity values.

   3. Bin 16, at 20m, has been heavily interpolated from mid-May
through early June of 1997. Linear interpolation was used for
runs of bad data containing 1 to 4 points, and predictive
interpolation was employed with some longer runs.

   4. Bin 17, at 12m, has been heavily interpolated throughout. In
      addition lines 12392 through 13976 (0945 14 May 97 through
0945 5 Jun 97) were badly damaged and have been removed.

   5. The shallowest bin, bin 18 at 4m, contains a large number of
gaps that could not be bridged. These gaps remain in the record.
The non-gappy portions extend from the start of the record to
      17 Dec 96; from 16 Jan 97 to 28 Apr 97; and from 12 Jun 97 to the
end of the record. The segment from 28 Apr 97 to 12 Jun 97 contains
many long and short gaps. All of the intact (i.e., non-gap)
portions of the record have been heavily interpolated.

   6. Although temperature was measured at the depth of the ADCP
(150m minimum) it has been included in the Bin 1 (140m) data
      file.

   7. Summary of data quality

      a. Velocity: With the exception of the gaps caused by memory
failure, data quality is quite good in bins 1 through 15
(i.e., up to a depth of 28m). 3 shallower bins have been
processed, but their quality is spotty.

      b. Temperature: Quality is excellent throughout.
